Did you know that, for quite a few years now, Nooelec has been teaming up with the good people at MathWorks in order to provide free seminars and SDRs to students and makers across all of North America? If you don't know who MathWorks are, you almost certainly know of their primary software packages--MATLAB & Simulink.
On September 17th, 2019, Mike McLernon and Div Tiwari of MathWorks conducted an SDR seminar and download workshop at the Maker Space facility of NYU, in Brooklyn, NY. Professor Mike Knox of NYU hosted the event. About 20 students attended, many of whom did not have a communications background. They first heard a talk on the importance of SDR and MathWorks offerings in this area, then they downloaded the RTL-SDR hardware support package onto their laptops. All the participants succeeded with their downloads, and they ran such examples as FM Broadcast Receiver, Spectral Analysis, and ADS-B Aircraft Tracking. Several attendees indicated that because of the workshop, they would consider a career in wireless.
On September 18th, Mike ran the SDR seminar and download workshop for about 20 people at the WINLAB facility of Rutgers University. WINLAB is one of the largest academic SDR testbeds in the world, with 400 nodes. It is administered by Ivan Seskar, who has been associated with the lab almost from its 1989 inception. Almost all the workshop attendees were also associated with WINLAB. Many of them expressed enthusiasm for the MathWorks RTL-SDR capabilities, and were poised to do more experimentation on their own.
On September 24th, Rameez Ahmed, also of MathWorks, and Mike conducted an SDR seminar and download workshop at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. Professor Shengli Zhou of UConn hosted the event. About 20 students attended, most of whom are students in an undergraduate SDR lab taught by Prof. Zhou. They first heard a talk on the importance of SDR and MathWorks offerings in this area, then they downloaded the RTL-SDR hardware support package onto their laptops. Nearly all the participants succeeded with their downloads, and they successfully ran the FM, ADS-B, and other examples.
