This is an antenna?
Yes! This is what is called a PCB antenna or patch antenna. It consists of a ground plane and a low-profile antenna, with a connector on the bottom-right corner to enable easy integration to your SDR application.
How do I use it?
Simply connect the antenna to your favorite SDR using the Male SMA to Male SMA barrel connector included.
Does the antenna require any DC power?
No, it is a passive antenna and does not require power. It is safe to use with bias-tee capable SDRs, like the NESDR SMArTee XTR, however.
Does the antenna need to be mounted to be effective?
No. We have had success in our laboratory environment using this antenna on a flat surface, however mounting vertically using a tripod or similar stand could be beneficial for non-controlled environments.
What else do I need to use this antenna?
At minimum, you'll need a compatible SDR which is capable of receiving at the target frequency (1550 MHz), and an appropriate RF adapter to connect the antenna to it. We also recommend pairing the antenna with one of our Inmarsat LNA modules, either the SAWbird iO or the SAWbird+ iO.
